Director of Communications
Fred Pletsch was named Director of Communications for the CCHA on September 24, 2001. A 1980 graduate of Ryerson University in Toronto where he captained the varsity hockey team and earned a Bachelor of Applied Arts degree in Radio & Television Arts, Pletsch has extensive hockey broadcasting experience as a play-by-play announcer for the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche. At the college level, he has served as both an analyst and play-by-play commentator on FSN Detroit’s CCHA television package for the past seven seasons, has provided color commentary on ESPN for the NCAA Tournament on three occasions and, in 2004, worked for ESPN as a sideline reporter at the Frozen Four in Boston. He also hosts the league’s weekly radio show, Inside the CCHA, and, last season, hosted the U.S. College Hockey Report on XM Satellite Radio. In the summer of 2005, Pletsch played a key role in the CCHA’s successful bid to play host to the 2010 Frozen Four at Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions, by compiling background materials and hosting the presentation made in Indianapolis to the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee. Working closely with Division I hockey’s communications directors to address common issues and concerns, he was also instrumental in the establishment of national awards including the Derek Hines Unsung Hero and National Rookie of the Year. Prior to joining the CCHA, Pletsch served as Commissioner of the Junior ‘A’ North American Hockey League for three years. During that time, NAHL representatives graduated over 150 players to the NCAA Division I ranks. A native of Chatham, Ont., Pletsch resides in Canton, Mich., with his wife Kelly.
