THIS IS MY STORY - A Coaches' Lasting Impact
March 12, 2008
A good coach teaches his players the fundamentals of the game, but the lessons of a great coach go beyond simply how to win a game. Miami senior defenseman Charley Fetzer was lucky enough to learn from a great coach - not just about the game of hockey but the challenges of life.
Not Just a Hockey Coach When asked to write a story, I thought about all of my experiences and people who have made impacts on my life. I have played for many coaches throughout my life, each having some impact on my career; however, one coach stands out and continues to be influential to this day. Wally Naumenko coached me for three years, and in those years taught me more about life and hockey than any other coach I have played for in my career. I was actually a forward when I first played for Wally, but he quickly convinced me I was more fit to be defenseman. He had a knack for the game, and it was better for me not to question him. I use lessons from Wally in every game I play, and I can still hear him yelling at me to move my feet. Aside from teaching the game, Coach Wally taught me about life. He built character in his players and taught us how to be successful in life, not just hockey. He has coached thousands of players from the junior level to college and the professional ranks, making an impact on each young man. Wally also coached my teammate Vinny Loverde, who I share stories with and laugh with often. Having the opportunity to write this story, I felt it only appropriate to write about the man who provided me with the tools and knowledge to make it to this level.
Wally unexpectedly passed away in 2006. His premature departure was difficult for many of his players, and especially, his family. Wally touched many lives in a positive way. I am lucky to have a teammate now who understands and shares the impact Wally had on us. He continues to challenge me mentally and physically, and I am a better person each day for the lessons he has given me.
